I've heard a few horror stories about aces who have been laughed out of blanket queer organizations or gatherings...but has anyone tried to join a blanket queer org and had a good experience?

Honestly, I haven't made the effort to try. Partly because I've heard the horror stories, too, and I find them too scary for me to deal with right now, and partly because I just don't have the energy to take on another project right now.

I don't know how the organization I'm involved in would react to my asexuality as a whole (I know a number of individuals at least would be welcoming), but they would still welcome me as an ally.

I had a very good reaction from my college queer rights organization, Spectrum. They put ace issues on the agendas now too. =)

AWESOME UPDATE: It turns out that there is in fact another ace in the group already who, to make it even better, two years ago did all the preliminary workshops/programs/head-banging necessary to make it totally cool with the long-standing members. There may be a future for more regular visibility efforts now that there are two of us.
Therefore this group is officially a +.

Wonderful news, a campus-wide queer pride event at my school has invited the asexuals and allies--A.C.E., or Asexual Communication and Education Club--that I started to participate ^_^

I'm planning on joining my school's GSM group and hopefully it goes well..I'm already friendly with one of the heads of the group, so there's that.
