So some of you who have been/are on AVEN might recognise the user name, I guess XD And I'm entirely unsure of what else to say, so I guess I should introduce myself? I'm an aromantic ace, British, female, doing an MA in Creative Writing. I knit and I bake cakes (though not at the same time) and I have a fanatical devotion to everything Doctor Who. I think that covers the important stuff!

I've always wanted to learn how to knit. I have a friend who does, and I've always envied her in having a hobby that looks so nice and repetitive and relaxing which also results in something useful at the end.
Er, welcome!

Yep, it is great for that! I like having things to do with my hands, especially while I'm watching TV shows or on public transport and the like (reading makes me carsick, but knitting is fine for some reason). And you can make a wide range of interesting things (I've just finished some gloves and started a doll's top - I knitted my niece a doll for her birthday and think she might like some new clothes for it for Christmas!)
But yes, if we weren't limited by the great divide of the computer screen I'd sit you down with some spare yarn and needles and give you a lesson. If you'd like to learn it shouldn't be too hard to pick up, especially if you can persuade your friend or someone to teach you the basics (or failing that, you can learn most things off the internet and youtube videos!)

I had a lesson when I was about fifteen in an English lit class, but it really didn't take then. My friend is currently applying to grad school and trying to finish her thesis and up to her ears in work, so I am rather reluctant to haul her over for a knitting lesson for a little while. I might try looking on the Internet to learn, though.

Ah, knitting...lots of fun and great stress-relief, but I haven't knitted since I fell in love with my knitting tutor and she promptly started treating me like shit. There are some great YouTube knitting vids, though.
Anyway, welcome to KotST, virescence ^_^

What were you doing in English Lit that led to knitting lessons? And ouch for the grad thesis. I could hunt through some of the sites I use and see which have the best videos etc. of the basic things for you? I figure since I know what I'm doing already I could spot a good video/set of instructions better! - Thanks for the welcome XD Nice to be here! Ouch for the knitting tutor, though I'm sorry you were treated like that...

It was a unit on A Tale of Two Cities, which has a character who knits constantly. This is a Theme. So... they tried to teach my entire class to knit!
Videos would be awesome! I was thinking of just looking on my own, but if you have an eye out anyway...

Why didn't we get to do stuff like that! Anyway: this is a pretty good site with videos on all the basic stuff you'll need. It also has videos for both styles of knitting (there are basically two, English and Continental, the difference being which hand you hold the yarn in. Continental is trickier, but quicker. I knit English.) Ad I recommend trying to use the Long-Tail cast on when you start out, which is the one that site reccomends. It looks tricky, and takes a bit of trying to learn, but once you get it it's very quick and simple.
